I get seasick. I can get seasick watching a movie. I even used to take Dramamine while editing my own vacation videos. So I asked my doctor for drugs. I said "morphine, heroine … whatever you say, I'll take it." Phenergan/Dexedrine was recommended by a physician who'd been to the Southern Ocean many times, but my doctor refused and gave me Scopolamine – the little round patch. Then he told me it could cause "strange behavior" and I should tell people with me that I have it on, so if I start to behave strangely they can pull it off. A couple issues with that: I never met these people before, so how would they know; most of them have the patch on too, so who are they to judge; and just what aspect of spending thousands of dollars to bob around the Southern Ocean with a hundred strangers for a month taking pictures would not be considered "strange behavior"?

So between Friday February 3 and Tuesday February 28, 2006 I took about 9000 pictures – five rolls of film, the rest digital … strange, indeed! During the following 26 months I relived the trip day by day in sequence, selecting images as I went. I processed, cropped and tweaked each one. And in the end there were about 1580 finished images, from which I assembled these views from the end of the earth …
