I went back to pictures taken on the 2006 tour to the Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica ... shot with an 8megapixel Canon 1DIIN. It had much less tonal range than today's 5DII or 1DIV. The process ... make five copies of the image in DxO, adjust exposures -2, -1, 0, +1, +2 stops and process the DxO files ... import the files into Photomatix and tell it the exposures, then process into a single 32 bit HDR image ... tone map the image to a 16 bit file ... open in Photoshop and optimize contrast and color saturation, adding a bit of sharpening. I think the results have far more detail than could be achieved with single image processing.
